UFC 137 medical suspensions: Palaszewski and Vera suspended up to six months

The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued medical suspensions to 10 fighters from this past weekend's UFC 137 event, and two could be out for an extended period of time.

Preliminary-card winners Bart Palaszewski and Brandon Vera both received six-month suspensions, though they can be cleared early by doctors.

MMAjunkie.com today requested and received the list of suspensions from the NSAC.

LAS VEGAS - MMAjunkie.com was on scene for today's official "UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz" weigh-ins, where out of the 22 competitors, Tyson Griffin was the only fighter who did not successfully make weight.

Today's entertaining festivities, which featured a brief dust-up between main event competitors B.J. Penn and Nick Diaz, took place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The same venue hosts Saturday's pay-per-view event.

Check out images of all the fighters, including Penn, Diaz and the largest Roy Nelson ever seen on the scales.

Fake and real Lesnar look right at home in WWE 12 video game

The UFC allowed its biggest pay-per-view star Brock Lesnar to appear in the latest WWE video game. The Lesnar open in the game is pretty cool and probably has wrestling fans wishing this were true:

"Now after an extended absence ... he's back! And this time, the gloves are off. He's bigger, badder and better than ever before."

The real Lesnar then emerges. We don't get much of a look, but Lesnar does look noticably thinner in the face and a little smaller across the shoulders. After multiples battles with diverticulitis and adjusting to a new diet, it's hard to imagine Lesnar carrying 285-300 pounds like he used to.

UFC 137 Results: Roy Nelson takes out Mirko Cro Cop with third round TKO

Mirko Cro Cop went out on his shield at UFC 137, putting in his best effort in recent memory before succumbing to Roy Nelson in the third round of their bout on Saturday night.

Saying before the fight that it was most likely his farewell bout, Cro Cop battered Nelson in a huge flurry during the second round, and handled himself well standing for much of the fight. However, Nelson still ended up getting the better of many of the exchanges, and in the third round he dropped Cro Cop against the cage, took his back and forced a stoppage with a series of undefended strikes.

Nelson rebounded from an ugly loss to Frank Mir with the win, and said after the fight that he wanted a fight with the Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos winner, because he's "too old for this s***."

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.
Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! UFC 137 Morning After: Nick Diaz Shows He's the Man to Take on GSP

Filed under:

Nick Diaz punches B.J. Penn at UFC 137.The UFC made the right call: Nick Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre needs to happen. Right away.

Diaz showed in beating B.J. Penn on Saturday night at UFC 137 that he's the best man to fight St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title, and there's no reason for the UFC to wait to book that fight. Sorry, Carlos Condit, but Diaz vs. GSP is the fight to make.

Obviously, the UFC knows that, because UFC President Dana White announced after UFC 137 that Diaz-GSP is happening next. This is a great development for those of us who think GSP has grown too comfortable over the last couple of years. Stylistically, Diaz is the welterweight who can give St. Pierre the most problems: Diaz's high-volume striking style could frustrate St. Pierre in much the same way it frustrated Penn on Saturday night, and Diaz is good enough off his back that St. Pierre won't be able to simply take him down and dominate him on the ground.

Diaz was smart to call out St. Pierre immediately following the fight, accusing St. Pierre of being scared to fight him. The reality, of course, is that St. Pierre is a tremendous fighter who wouldn't be afraid of anyone, but it worked: UFC announcer Joe Rogan reported that St. Pierre was begging White after the fight to let him get a shot at Diaz, and before the night was over White made the call that Diaz would get the title shot.

The only reason not to book GSP vs. Diaz right now is that it would be unfair to Condit, who had been promised the next shot at the welterweight belt. White said Condit "agreed to step aside," although I'm guessing White didn't give Condit much choice. Condit has been nothing but a great fighter in the cage and a classy guy outside the cage, and it's a shame that giving Diaz the next fight essentially means punishing Condit even though Condit did nothing wrong.

But those are the breaks of the fight game. The UFC needs to make the best fights, and right now the best welterweight fight it can make is Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz.

UFC 137 Notes
-- Two legends of the sport, Mirko Cro Cop and B.J. Penn, said after their UFC 137 losses that they're going to retire. For Cro Cop, I think that's entirely appropriate: He's 37 years old and hasn't had a really big win since he beat Josh Barnett in the Pride Open Weight Grand Prix more than five years ago. For Penn, I think he'll reconsider: He's only 32 and can still compete with the best in the world at both lightweight and welterweight.

-- Brandon Vera probably saved his job in the UFC by refusing to tap out to Eliot Marshall's arm bar in the closing seconds of their preliminary fight. If Vera had lost to Marshall, he almost certainly would have been cut, but his unanimous decision victory will earn him another fight inside the Octagon. Vera suffered a serious enough arm injury that he wasn't able to have his hand raised, but he gutted out a tough win.

-- Good for UFC announcer Joe Rogan for mentioning Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren, who was in the corner of Scott Jorgensen, and good for the UFC's production people for showing Warren talking to Jorgensen between rounds. The easier thing for the UFC to do would simply be to pretend that Bellator doesn't exist, but it's to the UFC's credit that they're willing to mention fighters from other promotions.

UFC 137 Quotes
-- "Oh, my God, it's a dream come true. ... I think I broke both my hands, but it was so worth it." -- Bart Palaszewski after knocking out Tyson Griffin.

-- "Even though we are in a tough situation, Japanese MMA is not dead." -- Hatsu Hioki after his split-decision win over George Roop.

Good Call
-- I love that one judge gave Ramsey Nijem a 30-25 scorecard in his unanimous decision victory over Danny Downes. Nijem completely dominated the fight, and Downes did next to nothing, and giving Nijem a couple of 10-8 rounds was completely appropriate. We don't see 10-8 rounds as often as we should, and we hardly ever see 30-25 scorecards at all. Kudos to the judge (whose name wasn't read) who recognized how thoroughly Nijem had whipped Downes.

%VIRTUAL-Gallery-137903%

Bad Call
-- In hindsight, the decision to get the card started with Dustin Jacoby vs. Clifford Starks was a mistake: The two fighters were making their UFC debuts, both men looked nervous and tentative, and it turned out to be a thoroughly dull 15-minute affair. Starks won 30-27 on all three judges' cards and did just enough to earn another UFC fight, while Jacoby will surely be cut. This was not a good fight at all, and it got the night off to a terribly slow start.

Stock Up
-- Donald Cerrone is now 4-0 in the UFC in 2011, and he said after beating Dennis Siver that he's hoping to get a fight in December. If he gets that fight and wins it, a 5-0 calendar year would be a truly extraordinary achievement -- that hardly ever happens in the modern UFC.

Stock Down
-- Tyson Griffin is a fan favorite who's won the Fight of the Night award five times in his UFC career, but he probably doesn't have a place on the UFC roster after his knockout loss to Bart Palaszewski. Griffin moved down to featherweight because he lost three in a row at lightweight. Now he has a loss at featherweight -- and he failed to make weight for this one. He'd be a natural fit for Bellator.

Fight I Want To See Next
Nick Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre. Dana White made the right decision to make it happen.

Sonnen threatens to turn up the heat on Silva; ?Spider?s? manager says Chael is either crazy or stupid

Chael Sonnen is still waiting and he's beginning to lose his patience.

On Saturday, the middleweight title challenger sent out a cryptic tweet directed at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva basically saying accept the fight or beware.

Sonnen threatens to turn up the heat on Silva; ?Spider?s? manager says Chael is either crazy or stupid

Silva's manager Ed Soares appeared with the folks on HDNet's "Inside MMA" and hasn't changed his stance on giving Sonnen a second shot.

"I think Chael's delusional," Soares said of Sonnen's claim that he's the real champ and that the loss at UFC 117 was less than legitimate. "At the end of the day, he tapped, he quit, he gave up. Take a number and get to the back of the line. You had your opportunity."

Soares said Silva had little reaction to Sonnen's challenge in the Octagon at UFC 136.

"He just thinks the guy's crazy. He's just thinks the guy is a lunatic. It doesn't really affect him too much," said Soares.

Silva did tell Soares that Sonnen's shots at his wife were disrespectful.

HDNet's Bas Rutten seemed to agree with Soares' back of the line comment (2:50 mark). Who's in this imaginary line and who does Sonnen need to beat to earn the next shot? It's hard to name anyone else in the division currently who deserves the shot more than Sonnen.

Is Sonnen falling back in the contender line? Camp Silva is now a fan of Bisping

Is Sonnen falling back in the contender line? Camp Silva is now a fan of BispingThe jockeying continues between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's camp. Will Sonnen's WWE-style call-out be rewarded or will Silva's manager Ed Soares successfully lobby UFC management that the brash American shouldn't be next?

Last week, Soares told HDNet's "Inside MMA" that Sonnen needs to go to the back of the line of middleweight contenders before he gets another title shot. Who's in that line?

Soares said he's never thought much of Michael Bisping in the past, but now the Brit should be in the mix for a title shot.

[...] People talk about Chael and Brian Stann, and sometimes people are focused on the TUF show. But I think Bisping could be a good opportunity. GSP could be a good opportunity," Soares told Sherdog.com.

That doesn't mean Soares is against Silva facing Sonnen.

"There's a lot of great opportunities, and I do think the Chael fight could potentially sell. It could be a big seller. I think it could be a huge pay-per-view. So I see all angles of it, but I'm just expressing what Anderson has talked to me about. That's how he feels."

Sonnen says all of this is irrelevant. He believes Silva is ducking him, but pointed out to Jim Rome that it's not the champ or his manager who make the fights.

"Whether he wants to do it or not, we're gonna do it. Dana will make him ... Anderson doesn't pick the fights and his manager, that keeps getting air time, darn sure doesn't have anything to do with it," Sonnen said (9:45 mark). "Dana White will decide, and if Dana says yes, then we're fighting and if Dana says no, then we're not. That's end of it. I don't argue with Dana. I don't need Anderson's opinion, I'll slap him in the face the next time I see him."

Does Bisping deserve a shot? He's certainly going to get some steam building as Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" unfolds. The problem is timing.

Can the UFC wait until early December to schedule the next Silva fight? Bisping and fellow coach Jason Miller meet at the TUF 14 Finale on Dec. 3 in Las Vegas.

Cerrone moves into title picture by smashing Siver at UFC 137

LAS VEGAS - The new Donald Cerrone is one scary individual. The former WEC star continued his assault on the UFC lightweight by destroying as previously hot Denis Siver in less than three minutes.

Cerrone (17-3, 4-0 UFC) rocked Siver on the feet several times before finishing him with a rear-naked at the 2:25 mark of the first round in the second fight on the UFC 137 Spike broadcast.

Cerrone's now won six straight fights and last two have come via brutal knockout. The list of title contenders is long at 155 pounds, but Cerrone has certainly earned himself a shot at one of the guys in the top six.

Both fighters came out throwing, but it was Cerrone who was able to deal with getting hit. He fired back hard shots and when he landed a huge left kick to the head, it was the beginning of the end for the Russian fighting out of Germany. Siver's legs were lost. He wobbled for several seconds before grabbing a Cerrone leg and slowing the down the fight along the cage.

The fighters separated and Cerrone landed a another right straight down the pipe. Siver went down to his knees where Cerrone jumped on his back and quickly got his hooks in. Seconds later, he slapped on the rear-naked choke and Siver tapped almost immediately.

Cerrone loves to fight so he may not wait until one of the big boys is free to fight. He said before and after the fight, he'd like another bout before the end of 2011. He's 4-0 this year.

Siver (19-8, 8-5 UFC) had won four straight coming in.

Dana White reveals UFC on Fox 1 prelims to stream live on Facebook, Fox.com

The preliminary card for the UFC's debut on Fox will not have a television outlet, but UFC President Dana White revealed on Thursday that the nine fights scheduled prior to the UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will stream live on Facebook and Fox.com. MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani posted the revelation on Twitter following the UFC 137 pre-fight press conference.

It's certainly disappointing that a potential number one contender bout between Ben Henderson and Clay Guida won't be guaranteed to air on television, but the addition of Fox.com as a streaming location could open it up to more people than Facebook. Especially if Fox promotes the stream on television as the lead in to the hour long broadcast from Anaheim later that night.

UFC 137's Nelson says 'Cro Cop' still one of world's best but no longer intimidating

LAS VEGAS - There was a time, not all that long ago, when stepping into the cage with striking specialist Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic was considered an awfully risky proposition.

But with Filipovic currently mired in 2-3 slump, the aura of invincibility that he once carried into combat no longer exists.

Nevertheless, his UFC 137 opponent, Roy Nelson, believes Filipovic is still a worthy opponent. Sure, the losses have damaged the Croatian's fighting reputation, but Nelson believes it's still an honor to step in the cage against one of the sport's all-time greats.
