Dan Henderson excited about UFC return

The UFC got one step closer to housing all of Mixed Martial Arts? elite competitors when it re-signed Dan Henderson after the 41-year old spent a little more than a year fighting for Strikeforce where he became the promotion?s light heavyweight champion and stopped the once-unbeatable Fedor Emelianenko with strikes in the opening round of [...]

UFC on Versus 6's Johnson: Brenneman a tougher matchup than Marquardt or Story

Forget Nate Marquardt or Rick Story; Anthony Johnson believes Charlie Brenneman is a better opponent.

Say what? The wrestler with the curl-fro better than two heavy-handed and dynamic veterans sacked by circumstance?

"He's the kid that nobody knew about - he's like, an overnight sensation," said Johnson, who meets Brenneman on Saturday's UFC on Versus 6 main card. "He possesses a lot."

Strikeforce Challengers 19 brings 203,000 viewers to Showtime

Last Friday's Strikeforce Challengers 19 card saw a slight uptick in viewership from August's 18th edition of the series, bringing in 203,000 viewers to Showtime, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com. The card, headlined by Lorenz Larkin's third straight victory in Strikeforce, took place from the Pearl at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, and also featured victories by Ryan Couture and Jason High during the broadcast. It bounced back from the 181,000 viewers that tuned in last month for Strikeforce Challengers 18, and it ranks ninth of the 19 events in terms of viewers.

If Cruz takes out Johnson, there?s a long line of contenders waiting for him

If Cruz takes out Johnson, there?s a long line of contenders waiting for him

The storm is brewing down at 135 pounds. The veterans are probably jockeying for one final shot at Dominick Cruz, and then there's going to be an unfusion of young fighters in the next 18 months.

First Cruz has to successfully defend his title his this weekend against Demetrious Johnson at UFC on Versus 6. After that, who the heck knows.

Bloody Elbow did a nice job of listing some of the big fights upcoming in the bantamweight division. It looks like the winner of the UFC 139 fight between Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles will get the next shot at Cruz. Then there's these scheduled matchups:

Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen (UFC 137) - This is a big fight for Curran. The 34 year old veteran has fought everywhere - Pride, the UFC, WEC - and is 4-1 since leaving the WEC in 2009. A win here could move him right into title contention, largely because he would make a new name at the top. Jorgensen looked great in his last fight, and will hope for another spectacular finish here.

Brad Pickett vs. Renan Barao (UFC 139) - Pickett has been out this year due to injury, but he's on a great 10-1 run that includes his claim as the only man to defeat Demetrious Johnson. A Pickett win here and a Johnson win would give Pickett a strong argument for a title shot. As for Berao, he lost his MMA debut, but in the 27 fights and over 6 years since that debut, he's never been defeated again. That's an impressive run.

On this list of future contenders posted by Bloody Elbow, who has the best chance of getting in line after Faber or Bowles? Here's our take:

Joe Benavidez: It seems unlikely that he'd get a third shot at Cruz and he's got to be a shoo-in as one of the first fighters to challenge for the new UFC 125-pound title coming in 2012.

Michael McDonald: He's 20 and will be brought along slowly. That said, in the next 18 months he has a chance to be where 22-year-old Rory McDonald is in the welterweight division and Anthony Pettis, 24, is at lightweight.

Miguel Torres - It looks like Torres has a long road back to contender status. Once 36-1, the 30-year-old veteran has lost 3-of-5 and may be stuck in the role of fighting some young guns for the next year or so. Up next is 24-year-old Nick Pace at UFC 139.

Takeyu Mizugaki - The Japanese slugger looked better than ever in destroying Cole Escovedo at UFC 135, but if he can't win a big fight he'll be stuck in the No. 5-10 range for the foreseeable future. Mizugaki is 0-4 against Faber, Torres, Jorgensen and Bowles.

BE points out nicely that no one should overlook Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" either. The winner and runner-up from the TUF 14 Finale could be throw right into the mix with the veterans. That dude wins three or four fights coming out of the gates, and he'll be mentioned with the elite. There's some exciting things on the horizon at 135.

Headlining duties prove a trying experience for UFC champ Dominick Cruz

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz still campaigns for the hearts and minds of the public.

Nowhere is that more evident than at the pre-event media workouts for UFC on Versus 6.

Before he could really get into the meat of any pre-fight talk about Demetrious Johnson, a reporter asks this gem: "Is it a little hard to get motivated for this fight because it's not Urijah Faber?"

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 135 walkout shirts

Quinton Jackson will try to take the UFC light heavyweight belt from Jon Jones this Saturday in Denver, and we finally have the answer to the most important question. What will they wear to the Octagon?

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 135 walkout shirts

Both fighters have taken into account the changing seasons, which is kind. Among the four choices for Jackson's walkout goods is this long sleeve shirt by MMA Elite, which wins points for being bright and shiny, but is a tad busy. Jones' Form Athletics sweatshirt is made of nice, warm fleece that's perfect for a fall day. The Jackson shirt is $37.99, while Jones' sweatshirt is $65.

Based solely on sartorial factors, who wins the fight? Jackson, as I'm a sucker for anything shiny. You can see my actual fight picks, as well as the rest of the Yahoo! Sports MMA staff, right here.

TFC 20: Varner and Rogers lose, Whitney scores dynamite flying knee KO

TFC 20: Varner and Rogers lose, Whitney scores dynamite flying knee KOJamie Varner and Brett Rogers must've thought a few fights in the minor leagues would be fine on their way back to the bigs. That's not the way it's working out for the former WEC and Strikeforce stars. Both Varner and Rogers lost last night at Titan Fighting Championship 19.

Varner looked sluggish throughout his fight against Dakota Cochrane. He leaned too heavily on his takedown game and couldn't control Cochrane on the ground. Cochrane (11-1) was the much better fighter on the feet taking a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards.

Varner, the former WEC lighweight champ, is now 1-4-1 in his last six. He's only 26, but has battle hand problems and other injuries for the last few years. Before the fight, Varner talked about his goals of a Zuffa return.

"I literally just took some time away from actual competition," Varner told the Kansas City Star. "I was still training and working out often. I took some fights last year that might have been (after) a little too quick of a turnaround. I needed my body to fully heal. I also took some college classes so I can have different opportunities in a few years down the road after my MMA career. For now I am 100 percent committed to MMA and getting to the UFC."

MMAjunkie says Varner was hinting at retirement on Twitter after the fight. It appears he deleted the tweet. Cochrane was a late replacement on this card. His victory shows just how sick the depth is around the country in all weight classes.

Rogers (11-4) was facing a better known entity in former UFC fighter Eddie Sanchez and result was the same. Rogers was a top-rated heavyweight for Strikeforce and even gave Fedor Emelianenko a run for his money during their 2009 fight.

Against Sanchez, he looked tentative and exhibited little growth in his game. Rogers never put his punches together and appeared unable to check a kick. Sanchez beat up his lead leg for 15 minutes. Sanchez took a split decision, 30-27, 28-29 and 30-27, from Rogers, who's now lost 4-of-5.

The best moment of the night came fromn Andrew Whitney. He and Laramie Shaffer engaged in a slugfest for two-plus rounds, but that all changed when Whitney delivered a picture perfect flying knee.

?Rampage?-Jones prefight trash talk off to blazing start

Jon Jones is still learning on the job. Being a big star fighter and genuinely dumping on your opponent isn't easy. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson may not be the fighter he was in his twenties, but he's better than ever when it comes to delivering awesome lines to denigrate his opponent.

In a piece of marketing genius, the fighters appeared together on "The Jimmy Kimmel Show." Jackson stole the moment. That's not a rip on Jones, he's simply not seasoned enough and frankly, it's just not in his nature to trash talk in brash fashion.

Jones defends his UFC light heavyweight title belt against Jackson, a former 205-pound UFC champ, in Saturday's main event at UFC 135.

Jackson dropped some classic lines about Jones being cocky (1:04 mark). He also countered Jones talk about being a criminal justice major by saying he understands now why the young man would've been a great detective (2:40 mark). That was a thinly-veiled shot about the fighter's spygate scandal a few weeks back. Jackson's funniest material was about his mother not being welcomed at fights (3:12 mark).

SB Nation doesn't give Jones an out on this one. That site says Jones loses in these exchanges because he's a phony.

At today's final prefight presser, there were more contentious exchanges between champ and challenger.

"I'm glad Jon Jones is underestimating me. He'll be very surprised on Saturday. I think this is the best camp of my career because I was very motivated," Jackson said. "Muscle Farm had a great facility. It was state of the art. I haven't been this motivated in a long time."

Jones doesn't understand where the "underestimating" stuff is coming from.

" I'm positive that I've never stated that Rampage doesn't have the tools to beat me. Never did I say that in any interviews. He's a unified Champion and has knocked out some of the best in the world. I'm not underestimating Rampage at all. That would be a very, very ignorant thing for me to do, to underestimate somebody with such a great status," said Jones.

But he does believe older fighters are easier to beat because of accumulated damage.

"I think a big part of getting knocked out, it comes more and more with the older guys in the sport. Your ability to take punches goes away. I have a fresh chin. I have a fresh passion and a fresh heart and I think that's gonna get me out of a lot of things. I have a passion to not wanna get hit and because of how serious I take this sport, that's why my chin hasn't been tested. I put a lot of time in evading and movements," said Jones.

Video analysis: Iole on the future of Jones in and out of the Octagon

Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole checked in with his thought on the awesome performance by Jon Jones at UFC 135. The kid is a 24-year-old world champion with plenty of room to grow.

Iole talks about how far Jones can take his UFC light heavyweight title reign and if he'll be one of the rare guys, who can bridge the gap to the non-MMA fan.

UFC Bantamweight Champ Dominick Cruz discusses why loss to Urijah Faber in 2007 was his turning point

UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz returns to action this Saturday on Versus, defending his title against Demetrious "Might Mouse" Johnson in Washington, D.C. Ahead of the fight, Cruz has penned another blog at NBCSports.com, where he talks about how losing to Urijah Faber - the only loss on his record - was the turning point of his career, check out a snippet below, and then head to NBCSports.com for the full entry:

"If I was to tell you that the night I suffered my sole professional loss also happened to be the moment I finally believed I could make it as a mixed martial artist, would you believe me? Well, regardless of whether you do or not, it's true. It sounds strange, but a March 2007 loss to Urijah Faber was the career turning point for me, and my impetus to work harder and truly become great at this sport. That was the moment I knew I could get somewhere and be somebody as a mixed martial artist. That loss made me never want to lose again...

After that I fight I came to the realisation that if I had the right coaching and worked on my grappling the way I needed to, I would only come back from that defeat a better fighter. I now had lessons to learn from and I set my mind on using that defeat as the turning point. I was only going to shoot for greatness from that point on...

I had to prove something to myself in [the rematch], and that is never easy. I am my own biggest critic, and it's taken years for me to believe in myself and reach a point where I feel I am the best in the world. I am harder on myself than anybody else ever could be. I needed that win over Faber to validate my claims and to prove to myself once and for all that I truly am the number one bantamweight in the world...

Josh Koscheck: ?(Matt Hughes) cannot beat my style and he knows it.?

Rarely, if ever, has an opponent surpassed welterweight icon Matt Hughes? level of confidence-bordering-on-arrogance. However, in the case of Josh Koscheck there?s no question Hughes? adversary at UFC 135 should be entering the fight with unwavering self-assurance.

That notion was supported earlier this week when Koscheck took to his Sportsnet blog regarding his match-up next weekend [...]
