Super 7 notebook: UFC champs reflect on current and future fights during Q&A

TORONTO - All seven UFC champs were on hand for a special "Super 7" Q&A session at UFC Fan Expo Toronto, but it was Jon Jones who almost stole the show.

But he had an advantage; Georges St-Pierre ducked out early.

The light-heavyweight champion shed some new light on his beef with former teammate Rashad Evans, whom he was supposed to fight before an injury put his first title defense on hold.

ROUNDTABLE: What is your favorite Randy Couture fight and why? MMATorch staff and contributors comment

CoutureRandy_210_50.jpg
What is your favorite Randy Couture fight and why?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

My favorite Randy Couture fight was his fight with Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74 in 2007. That wasn't the first PPV that I saw by any means, but it was the second PPV that I organized and had people over to watch, and that fight really sold everybody who attended on the UFC. And the main selling point was the gritty performance by Randy Couture.

OK, we all know that Gonzaga's nose was broken by a fluke collision of heads on a slam, but broken nose or no, once that fight started there was no way Couture was losing that fight.

The capper of it was when it was revealed that he broke his arm during the fight. Gonzaga may have eventually been as exposed as less than UFC-champion caliber. But on the night of that fight he was an absolute bull, and Randy Couture stuck about 42 swords into the hide of that raging bull.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

On March 3, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio, Randy Couture won the UFC Heavyweight title. He was a huge underdogand not many peoplegave him a chance of winning. That fight with Tim Sylviais not only my favorite fight of Randy's career, it is my favorite fight of all time. I was in attendance when Randy dominated every second of a 5 round instant classic. Most people had written him off as too old and too small to compete against the much younger and much larger Sylvia. It was not that he was able to win and pull off the upset, it was the way he won. He made Tim Sylvia look horrible in every aspect of the game. He was supposed to out wrestle Sylvia, but he out struck the best striker in the heavyweight division at the time. I love this fight, because it cemented Couture's place as one of the greatest fighters in the history of MMA.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I think my favorite Couture fight is the one he had against Brock Lesnar. Even though he lost, Randy proved that experience and skill is more valuable than size and strength and speed. For a while there, it looked as though Randy might get the win. It's too hard to pick from all of Randy's wins, he's had a lot of great fights. I got to go with the Lesnar fight.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

At this point, Randy Couture?s signature fight has to be his return to the Octagon against Tim Sylvia back at UFC 68. People have been counting out Randy Couture since his debut, and the final fight of his trilogy with Chuck Liddell gave everyone just cause to believe that Couture was done, including his retirement. However, Couture returning to the cage to defeat Tim Sylvia for the UFC heavyweight title was a seminal moment for the sport, and the punch he landed on Tim Sylvia to start it off has to be one of the most famous knockdowns in the history of MMA.

CHRIS PARK, MMATORCH UK SPECIALIST

My favourite Randy Couture fight of all time is his bout with, then heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia.

The heavyweight division was definitetly lacking excitement back then, and with Sylvia sitting (not exactly) pretty at the top, it was down to Couture to once again overcome the odds.

After almost finishing Sylvia in the first twenty seconds of the fight. Couture went on to absolutely dominate the giant champion for the entire five rounds, en route to re-claiming the UFC heavyweight title.

Couture breathed new life into an otherwise boring division and for that reason this ismy favourite Randy Couture fight of all time.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

My favorite Couture fight has to be the first time he fought Vitor Belfort. If nothing else, this was the FIRST time of many times that many critics, pundits, and fans doubted Randy Couture as being able to take out the Phenom at the fast start of Belfort's career. Couture proved why he should have been facing him in the first place, plus was able to lay the foundation to the legacy that he has been able to carve out since that win.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I'm tempted to pick something obscure, but I'll go with the first Randy Couture/Chuck Liddell bout. After he "lost" to Josh "PED" Barnett and tapped out to strikes against Ricco Rodriguez, everyone thought Couture was done. The assumption was that the UFC was feeding Couture to Liddell to help make Liddell a star. Instead, Couture looked amazing in his first match at 205 pounds and absolutely dominated Liddell, not only taking him down at will but oustriking him standing. It was an incredible performance.

MATT PELKEY, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

It has to be when he came out of retirement and beat Tim Sylvia for the UFC Heavyweight Title at UFC 68. At 43 and giving up roughly sixty pounds to a prime Sylvia, the question wasn't whether or not Couture could pull of the upset, but whether or not he could avoid serious injury. And then the fight started. Couture dropped Sylvia with a right hand less than a minute in and never looked back. You'd be hard pressed to find such a thoroughly dominating upset. Couture mixed up his striking with timely takedowns and won every single round and the fight 50-45. The crowd in Columbus, Ohio was insanely loud throughout and I still get chills thinking about them counting down the final seconds of the fifth round knowing they were about to see a championship belt around Couture's waist yet again.

Video analysis: Jake Shields has to fight without Cesar Gracie at his side

Georges St-Pierre is on a Patriots-like run right now. To take down the 2007 Pats you had to out-think Bill Belichick and his coaching staff, it's pretty similar to the sort of game planning and execution needed against GSP.

The UFC welterweight has won an amazing 30 straight rounds. That's sick. The man trying to derail this freight train is Jake Shields along with his mentor Cesar Gracie. One problem, Gracie isn't in Canada for the fight. His Brazilian visa doesn't allow him to cross the border to reach Toronto.

Yahoo! Sports' MMA expert Kevin Iole joined us to talk about the Pats versus Indianapolis of MMA. Without Gracie, can Team Shields take out GSP, backed by Greg Jackson, Firas Zahabi and John Danaher?

Shields' team questions GSP's heart.

"I think GSP is a phenomenal athlete. I think you gotta make it a war with him and I think you see what's inside of his soul," said Gracie.

Josh Gross from ESPN.com appeared with me on ESPN1100 in Las Vegas and downplayed Gracie's absence.

"That's not a big deal," Gross said (6:25 mark). There's been lots of times he's not traveled with his fighters or been in their corner. This is not something totally out of the blue for the Cesar Gracie camp."

Is Shields in trouble without Gracie there? Probably not, his head trainer Tariq Azim does most of the heavy lifting. What do you think? Will it matter?

Lentz vs. Oliveira, Grant vs. Riddle added to UFC on Versus 4 card in Pittsburgh

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_904.jpg
The UFC has added two more fights for this June's UFC on Versus 4 event in Pittsburgh, as they announced on Wednesday a lightweight bout between Nik Lentz and Charles Oliveira and a welterweight bout between T.J. Grant and Matt Riddle for the event.

Lentz is coming off his most exciting win in the UFC, a come-from-behind submission over Waylon Lowe at UFC Fight Night 24. The win moved his unbeaten streak to 14 fights, with a 5-0-1 mark inside the Octagon.

Oliveira looks to bounce back from the first loss of his career, suffered at the hands of top contender Jim Miller at UFC 124 in December. The kneebar submission loss halted a 14-fight winning streak to kick off his career, highlighted by exciting submission wins over Darren Elkins and Ultimate Fighter season eight winner Efrain Escudero in the UFC.

Grant has alternated wins and losses since joining the UFC in 2009, and looks to bounce back from a loss yet again in this fight with Riddle. The most recent loss came to Ricardo Almeida at UFC 124 in Decemeber, and he'll look to avoid losing two straight for the first time in his career.

Riddle as well looks to bounce back from a decision loss at UFC 124, his to debuting welterweight Sean Pierson. The Ultimate Fighter season seven veteran has fought all of his career fights in the Octagon, going 5-2 since his debut in 2008.

UFC on Versus 4 is headlined by a welterweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, and takes place from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. on June 26.

‘Philosopher’ Zahabi may be the best trainer in the game

If you think Georges St-Pierre is the most cerebral fighter in the game look no further than his coaches Greg Jackson and Firas Zahabi. They may be the best in the business and not because they understand the technique/physical side of things, but they're constantly trying to master the mental side.

Starting at 15 years old, Zahabi trained to be a fighter and then moved outside the cage as a trainer at 26. In between he went to Concordia University and majored in philosophy, which has a huge influence on how he handles his fighters.

"Philosophy's the root of all thinking. It's epistemology, learning how you know things. And I always thought it the fundamental building block of any science," Zahabi told Neil Davidson from the Canadian Press. "And I use philosophy every day. My training is always predicated on why. I cross-examine what type of reasoning is used to get to this conclusion. I think it's the key to success ? proper, rational training methods. We do a lot of different, radical things that a lot of people don't do."

Zahabi is always looking to broaden his knowledge so he even listens to audio books on his daily ride to and from TriStar Gym in Montreal. Davidson says Zahabi's recent reads include: "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson, "The 33 Strategies of War" by Robert Greene, and Plato's "Symposium."

What makes Zahabi so good and trusted by elite fighters like St-Pierre, Kenny Florian and Miguel Torres is that he's also hands on. He's still a fighter at heart. Zahabi, 31, just earned his own black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

"The thing about Firas that makes his such a good coach is because he's always evolving himself. . . . He's not only a great coach, he's a great fighter. I always believed he would have been a great a fighter if he chose that route but he chose the coaching route," says lightweight John Makdessi.

Zahabi is going to be a busy man on Saturday night at UFC 129. He's worked with GSP, Torres, Makdessi, Yves Jabouin and Rory MacDonald leading up to the card at the Rogers Centre.

The GSP-Jake Shields fight should be the ultimate chess match in and out of the cage. It pits two great fighters from two very good game planning camps in TriStar versus Cesar Gracie.

UFC 129 video report: Iole talks Rogers Centre and media presence

There's was plenty to talk about after a lengthy Wednesday press conference and the media session that followed with Dana White. Kevin Iole is Yahoo! Sports' man on the scene in Toronto for UFC 129. He joined us via Skype to talk about what the Rogers Centre may look like for this 55,000-seat setup. There's talk of a giant scoreboard and massive sound system. Maybe the scoreboard will look something like what Top Rank Promotions has used for several recent boxing events.

There was huge media contingent on hand. That included what seemed like of all the media in Toronto. Iole pointed out that maybe American media outlets should take a look at what's going down in Toronto this week. Why aren't U.S events always covered like this?

ESPN the Magazine report pegs Brock Lesnar as MMA's top earner in 2010

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LesnarBrockWK_150_21.jpg
A report in the new edition of ESPN the Magazine looking at the highest paid athletes in 30 different sports reveals that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar made the most money of any fighter in the sport of mixed martial arts in 2010.

Lesnar's estimated earnings of $5,300,000 came in slightly under the average top earnings for the 30 sports, though that number was skewed heavily by very large payouts in professional baseball, boxing, basketball and auto racing, each of which came in at around $25 million and up for the top earner.

That number for Lesnar was only for his estimated salary and pay-per-view earnings for the year, and didn't include any sponsorships and outside earnings from his two fights in 2010. Of the 30 sports listed, Lesnar's $5.3 million brought MMA to the #12 slot in terms of top earner.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: It's not at all surprising that Lesnar is the highest paid fighter in the sport, especially when this number doesn't even include sponsorships or anything else. He's the biggest pay-per-view draw the sport has seen so far, and even his $5.3 million is probably well below what it should be for the top draw in the sport. Still, with how young the sport is compared to all of the others on the list it's impressive that it's gotten to the point where the top draw is getting closer and closer to the level of pay of some of these other sports. There's still a long way to go, but it's heading in the right direction.

Mann Dominates, M'Pumbu and Hale Advance at Bellator 42

by Michael David SmithIn an exciting if overlooked Saturday night fight card, Ronnie Mann put on an impressive showing in his Bellator Fighting Championships debut, while Richard Hale and Christian M'Pumbu advanced to the light heavyweight tournament final at Bellator 42.

Mann spent three rounds brutalizing an overmatched Josh Arocho, winning a unanimous decision in which one judge awarded him a shocking (but not completely unreasonable) 30-25 victory, while the other two judges gave him the more conventional 30-27 scores. The British Mann was making his Bellator debut, and he was confident and aggressive, displaying great positional control and violent ground and pound. Mann, who improved his professional MMA record to 19-2-1, showed that he's going to be a force to be reckoned with in Bellator's featherweight division, although he's going to have to beat much better opponents than Arocho, whose record fell to 6-10.

Video analysis: Iole sets the record straight on MMA vs. boxing salaries

With each passing day, MMA is getting closer to the interest shown towards mainstream sports. With that comes more transparency and a deeper look at everything that concerns fighters including their salaries. It was week reported last week by ESPN the Magazine that Brock Lesnar was the highest earner in 2010 at $5.3 million. If that's the true figure, it seemed a bit short of Manny Pacquiao's $32 million. Those are the top dogs, but what does that mean for boxers and MMA stars in the two-through-30 range?

This money talk in MMA even prompted HDNet's Inside MMA to get into the issue a few weeks ago about Nick Diaz. The suggestion was made that Diaz needed to leave MMA to get the money he deserves. Kenny Rice said Diaz might make as much in one boxing match as he's made in 16 of his 32 MMA fights combined (1:08 mark).

That was odd assertion considering Diaz just made $325,000 in his last two fights. Is that fair for a guy who's roughly the 15th biggest star in MMA?

Yahoo!'s MMA/boxing expert Kevin Iole checked in with us to explain how there's no middle class in boxing and that it's highly unlikely Diaz would fetch anything close to 175k for a boxing match.

Welterweights Brian Ebersole and Dennis Hallman to meet at UFC 133 in August [UPDATED]

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_897.jpg
A welterweight bout between Brian Ebersole and Dennis Hallman is headed to UFC 133 this August, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

Ebersole made his organizational debut in February, scoring a major upset in the division over Chris Lytle, snapping Lytle's four fight winning streak. A veteran of over 60 fights, Ebersole had spent the last several years of his career in Australia, where he won seven straight fights prior to the bout with Lytle. He'll fight in the U.S. on this card for the first time since 2007.

Hallman knows a thing or two about upsets, holding two victories over former UFC welterweight kingping Matt Hughes. He made a return to the UFC in 2009 after four years fighting in other promotions, and has won two straight fights since losing that return fight. Most recently, Hallman defeated Karo Parisyan in quick fashion in November.

UFC 133 is expected to take place in Philadelphia, Penn. this August, though no headlining bout has yet been announced.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a solid welterweight fight for the preliminary card here. Ebersole pulled off a big upset in February, but neither of these guys will be making a run at a title shot in the UFC anytime soon, if at all, so this is a good next fight for each off their recent wins.

UPDATE: The UFC has now officially confirmed this fight for the UFC 133 card. There is still no date or location confirmed for the event.

UFC on Versus 4 is headlined by a welterweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, and takes place from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. on June 26.
